Diabetes in Pregnancy

Endocrine changes that occur during pregnancy due to hormonal imbalances. Treat your gestational diabetes on time for a healthy baby arrival.

What is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy in women who did not previously have diabetes. It occurs when pregnancy hormones interfere with the body's ability to use insulin effectively, causing blood glucose levels to rise.

If left untreated, gestational diabetes can pose risks to both mother and baby, including a larger-than-normal baby, premature birth, and an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes later in life. At EndoMedics, we provide specialist endocrine care throughout pregnancy to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Risk Factors & Signs

  • Elevated blood glucose on routine pregnancy screening
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Previous gestational diabetes in a prior pregnancy
  • Overweight or obesity before pregnancy
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Age over 25 at time of pregnancy
  • Previous delivery of a large baby (over 4.5 kg)
