Pituitary Disorders

Pituitary Disorders

It's a pea-sized gland, yet it is the Master Gland. Hypopituitarism and Hyperpituitarism can be dangerous if not treated on time.

What are Pituitary Disorders?

The pituitary gland, often called the 'master gland', sits at the base of the brain and controls the release of hormones from most other endocrine glands in the body. Despite being only the size of a pea, it regulates growth, metabolism, reproduction, blood pressure and stress response.

Pituitary disorders can result in either too much or too little hormone production, causing a wide range of symptoms throughout the body. Common conditions include pituitary adenomas (benign tumours), acromegaly, Cushing's disease, hypopituitarism and prolactinoma.

Common Symptoms

  • Headaches and visual disturbances
  • Unexplained fatigue and weakness
  • Changes in body weight or growth
  • Hormonal imbalances affecting reproduction
  • Abnormal milk production (galactorrhoea)
  • Enlarged hands, feet or facial features (acromegaly)
  • Adrenal insufficiency symptoms
