PCOS: More Than Just a Fertility Problem

PCOS polycystic ovarian syndrome women's health

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is often discussed in the context of fertility, but its metabolic and hormonal effects go much further. Here's what every woman with PCOS should know.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, making it one of the most common hormonal disorders we treat at EndoMedics. While it is often first identified when a woman has difficulty conceiving, PCOS has significant metabolic and long-term health implications that extend well beyond fertility.

PCOS is characterised by a combination of irregular menstrual cycles, elevated androgen (male hormone) levels, and polycystic ovaries on ultrasound. However, not every woman with PCOS will have all three features, which is why diagnosis can sometimes be delayed.

The underlying driver in most cases of PCOS is insulin resistance — the same mechanism that leads to Type 2 diabetes. This is why women with PCOS have a significantly higher lifetime risk of developing diabetes, and why managing insulin resistance is central to our treatment approach at EndoMedics.

Beyond fertility, PCOS can cause acne, excess facial and body hair, scalp hair thinning, weight gain and mood disturbances. These symptoms can significantly affect quality of life and self-esteem. The good news is that with the right endocrine management, most symptoms can be well controlled.

Treatment at EndoMedics is tailored to each patient's individual goals — whether that is regulating periods, managing skin symptoms, supporting weight loss, or optimising fertility. If you have been diagnosed with PCOS or suspect you may have it, a specialist endocrine consultation can make a real difference.
